Nursing Home Abuse: Nursing Home Inspection Delays in Los Angeles
Elder abuse in nursing homes can take many forms, including physical, verbal and financial abuse inflicted on residents by staff. One of the more insidious forms of abuse, however, is neglect. When elderly people are not properly cared for, their condition can quickly deteriorate, which can be a tragedy for both the elderly person who is forced to suffer, and his or her family, who may not immediately notice or identify the signs of neglect.
According to recent news reports, it is also possible for family members of the elderly to notice the signs of abuse or neglect quickly, remove their relative from the facility and file a report with the Department of Public Health – and still fail to see justice served. Delays in the inspection of skilled nursing facilities that have been reported for nursing home abuse seem to be a disturbing new trend in the Los Angeles area, with some investigations remaining open for months or even years on end. In the interim, potentially dangerous facilities remain open, with no indication of misconduct on their public records.
The Los Angeles County Auditor-Controller reports more than 3,000 open cases in Los Angeles County alone, 945 of which date back at least two years from the time of the initial complaint. In addition, it was recently revealed that public health officials told inspectors to close long-standing cases without actually investigating them in order to “clean up” the county’s considerable complaint backlog. All of this information combined paints a clear picture of the low standards that nursing homes are held to by public officials in Los Angeles, and highlights the need for increased vigilance on the part of concerned family members who would seek to protect their elderly relatives from harm.
