Woman Develops Life-Threatening Infection at Napa Care Facility
Napa, Calif. – Joann Travella was admitted to Golden LivingCenter – Napa for intravenous therapy to treat her myriad of medical conditions. Rather than providing her with the medical treatment she required, the facility utterly neglected her needs, causing her to develop a life-threatening infection.
“Joann was no exception to the facility’s practice to withhold the legally required minimum care she required, deserved and was promised, in favor of profit maximization,” said attorney Stephen Garcia. “The facility was well aware of Joann’s conditions and the care she required to prevent infection, yet they neglected her needs, causing her to develop a serious infection.”
Garcia & Artigliere filed a lawsuit against Golden LivingCenter – Napa for elder abuse, negligent hiring and negligent supervision. The lawsuit alleges that Travella was admitted into the facility in April 2016 to undergo antibiotic therapy. She had a history of cirrhosis of the liver, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, depression and anemia, as well as a number of other conditions.
The facility was well aware of Travella’s conditions and that she would require 24-hour assistance with all activities of daily living. Travella’s daughter warned the facility and staff, and presented medical documents that showed the severity of her mother’s condition. Yet the facility accepted responsibility for Travella, assuring the daughter that they were equipped to provide the proper care.
However, due to the facility’s negligence and failure to administer Travella’s intravenous antibiotic therapy, she developed a serious infection. In addition, the facility failed to evaluate her condition in a timely manner, implement interventions to address the development of the infection, and failed to adhere to physician’s orders by not communicating her emergent medical conditions.
“Instead of providing the required care to address the very conditions for which Joann was admitted to Golden LivingCenter – Napa, the facility neglected her conditions, directly leading to her injuries,” added Garcia.
