Stephen M. Garcia of the Garcia Law firm named one of Southern California’s SuperLawyers for 2008 by Law & Politics Magazine from the publishers of Los Angeles Magazine

On September 17, 2007, Stephen M. Garcia of The Garcia Law Firm was named one of Southern California’s Super Lawyers by Law & Politics Magazine from the publishers of Los Angeles Magazine.

Only 5% of licensed active attorneys in each state are named to the list. Mr. Garcia is honored to be one of the 5% in Southern California.

Law & Politics use a rigorous multi-step selection process. The protocol begins with the creation of the nomination pool. Candidates competed from two primary sources: a statewide nomination process in which lawyers are invited to nominate peers online, and the “star search” process in which research staff reviews legal trade publications, professional databases and online sources to identify outstanding attorneys who may have been overlooked in the nomination process.

Once the nomination is pooled, the staff evaluates the candidates based on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. This includes: verdicts, settlements, transactions, experience, honors and awards, pro-bono activity, scholarly lecture and writing, position within the firm or organization, bar activities.

Next, Law & Politics creates a blue ribbon panel in more than 70 areas of practice to evaluate candidates. The panel consists of those who have the highest pointers at this juncture in the process. Candidates are then grouped by firm size. There are four firm sizes, the parameters of which vary from state to state. The top candidates from each tier are chosen until 5% of the lawyers in the state have been selected.

Before publishing, Law & Politics Magazine staff conducts a background check of each candidate by reviewing various online and database resources.

Super Lawyers is different from other listing of lawyers in that more lawyers participate in the super lawyer selection process. In 2006, for example, 34,275 lawyers participated in their nomination and evaluation process.

Mr. Garcia comments, “I am once again very honored to be named as one of the Super Lawyers for our area. These awards are really not personal to me. Rather, they are a reflection of our firm’s efforts on behalf of disenfranchised consumers. It is an honor to serve as an advocate on behalf of consumers abused by corporate profiteers and it is an honor to be recognized for these efforts. We are grateful.”
