Stephen Garcia Named to The National Law Journal’s 2019 Trailblazers Plaintiffs’ Lawyer List

Partner Stephen M. Garcia was selected to The National Law Journal’s 2019 Trailblazers Plaintiffs’ Lawyer list for his successful representation of victims of elder and nursing home abuse.

A tireless advocate for elders for more than 30 years, Garcia’s actions have resulted in more than $1 billion in awards and have changed many facilities’ policies. In one of Garcia’s recent successes, he obtained a $38.6 million settlement against a number of doctors, a Long Beach hospital and numerous treating physicians for medical negligence, loss of consortium and violation of the Elder Abuse and Dependent Abuse Civil Protection Act (EADACPA); the largest EADACPA settlement in California history.

In addition to his work as a trial lawyer, Garcia has served as a legislative analyst around the rights and safety of elderly individuals and their caregivers, and has testified before the California Legislature in support of legislation to protect and advance those rights.

“I never thought I would be here this long, but I feel like I have at least 20 years left. When we started these lawsuits, elder care got a lot better. But now care is back to being poor, almost systemically, due to Medicare reimbursements. I will keep fighting the good fight,” Garcia said.
