Garcia & Artigliere Named a 2018 “Top Boutique” by Daily Journal

Garcia & Artigliere was recognized as one of 20 top boutique firms in California by the Daily Journal. The firm was lauded for its success in bringing greater awareness to elder rights and abuse, while securing high-profile victories that resulted in more than $151 million for consumers in the last two years.

In June 2017, Garcia & Artigliere served as counsel in a $53.6 million settlement with a large long-term care company based in Lake Forest. The plaintiff had filed a False Claims Act suit against the facility, alleging it fraudulently billed for Medicare and Medicaid/Medi-Cal reimbursement. The U.S. Justice Department also conducted an investigation into the facility’s billing practices.

This summer, the firm won a settlement of over $38 million based on allegations of medical negligence, loss of consortium, and violations of the Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act against a Southern California medical center and its doctors. This is believed to be the largest Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act settlement in the history of California.

Partner Stephen Garcia said he battled big firm defense lawyers in another elder abuse and negligent hiring and supervision case against a Fresno facility. The firm obtained a policy limit of $1 million in recovery. Additionally, the firm obtained another $1 million policy limit award in a case of sexual assault of an elder in Los Angeles County.

Headquartered in Long Beach, Garcia & Artigliere also has offices in Los Angeles, Arizona, Florida and Kentucky. Garcia said the firm’s growth has been significant in its ability to litigate any case size.

“We’re in a position now that because of the successes over the last two-plus decades, that we can fight any size firm no matter how big or the tactics used, and do so on a regular basis,” he added.

Garcia & Artigliere is consistently recognized for its relentless efforts in holding long-term care facilities accountable for elder abuse, and changed many facilities’ policies via injunctions in order to better care for this most vulnerable segment of our population.
