Mother killed in big-rig accident
A fatal accident at the intersection of State Road 206 and State Road 207 in Hastings took the life of a young mother, recently and injured her two children, ages 6 and 3. It was reported that the woman was speeding as she was taking her children to daycare and school.
Along the way, she got behind a semi-trailer truck, of North Carolina. As they approached the intersection, the light changed to red and the driver of the semi-trailer began to stop. The woman slammed into the back of the truck. The impact caused the auto to become pinned under the truck, trapping the woman and her children. St. John’s County Fire Rescue removed the passengers from the car. The three passengers were taken to a medical center in Jacksonville.
The woman, who suffered fatal injuries, died at the hospital. Her children are in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries. The truck driver suffered minor injuries. After investigating, the Florida Highway Patrol found that the woman and her children were not wearing seat belts or using safety seats. Officials are waiting for the results of a toxicology test to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors that caused the woman to crash into the truck. No charges have been made; the accident is under investigation.
My condolences go out to the family of the woman and her children.
