No one should have to experience abuse or mistreatment at the hands of someone they trust. Unfortunately for the aging population in Louisiana and across the U.S., the elderly are at risk of abuse perpetrated by caregivers at nursing homes and assisted living facilities, or in their own homes by in-home care professionals and family members. This epidemic must be addressed.

What Is Elder Abuse?
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines elder abuse as “…an intentional act, or failure to act, by a caregiver or another person in a relationship involving an expectation of trust that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult.” An older adult is a person aged 60 or older.
The five primary types of elder abuse are:
- Physical abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Psychological abuse
- Financial abuse/exploitation
Consequences of Elder Abuse
Elder abuse may cause varying degrees of harm to a victim. Potential injuries may include:
- Emotional trauma
- Pressure sores (bedsores/decubitus ulcers)
- Fecal impaction
- Broken bones
- Internal organ damage
- Severe burns, lacerations, or contusions
- Spinal cord injuries
- Traumatic head injuries
These injuries can be caused by intentional physical contact such as hitting, striking, or slapping a victim, or they may result from negligence. In either scenario, the party who acted intentionally or negligently could be held accountable. Our Los Angeles elder abuse attorneys can help you understand how liability (legal responsibility) works in these matters and who may be to blame.
