Elder abuse is a big problem in the state of Kentucky, and while there are several resources available to help fight this problem, at a city, state and federal level, not enough is being done and our elders are still suffering. A recent study of the extent of elder abuse, mentioned on the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) website (http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-11-208), estimated that 14.1 percent of non-institutionalized older adults had experienced physical, psychological, or sexual abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation in the past year. The GAO website lists recommendations for Executive Action made to the Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) and mentions matters for Congressional consideration, unfortunately a note in the comments relating to this says that Congress has taken no action to mandate HHS to conduct a period study of the extent of elder abuse.
Another government website USA.gov (the U.S. government’s official web portal) has a page specific to the topic of elder abuse (http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Seniors/Health/Abuse.shtml) has useful links to other websites including:
- Elder Abuse Helplines and Hotlines, by State
- Elder Abuse Resources from MedlinePlus
- Elder Rights Protection
- National Center on Elder Abuse
At a state level is the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) website, which is home to most of Kentucky’s human services and health care programs. Their website at http://chfs.ky.gov/dcbs/dpp/eaa/ also has a page devoted to elder abuse awareness. According to the website, the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services received 9,660 reports of elder abuse in 1997—this highlights how much of an issue elder abuse is in the state of Kentucky.
While these federal and state websites can be of help, sometimes it can still be difficult to find answers on elder abuse—especially when it comes to the law. That’s when you need to talk to a local Kentucky elder abuse attorney.
