Federal Government bans texting for Florida truck drivers

Archives, Trucking Accidents

Florida truck drivers will have to stop sending and receiving text messages or they will face criminal charges.  The U. S. Transportation Department has proposed to make an interim ban on text messaging permanent.  This applies to all interstate trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds.  Many trucking firms have already made it part of their policy and procedures.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports that a trucker takes his or her eyes off the road for about 4.6 seconds to send or receive a text message.  In a given year, about 6,000 people were killed and 500,000 injured because of a distraction such as this one.

I am hoping all Florida truck drivers will abide by this proposal and keep our Florida roads safe.
