Anyone Could Be a Victim of Elder Abuse: The Sad Story of Stan Lee
Elder abuse is unfortunately common. It takes many forms. Elderly people with physical limitations can be neglected or given inappropriate treatments by those who are supposed to take care of them. Older people are frequent targets of scams. They can be sexually, physically or emotionally abused. Financial abuse is also common.
Signs of Elder Abuse
If you have an elderly loved one, watch out for these signs of potential abuse:
- Changes in behavior
- Loved one becoming more emotional
- Changes in grooming or cleanliness
- Unexpected changes to the loved one’s will or other estate documents
- Someone trying to isolate the loved one from you, other family members or friends
Anyone Can Be a Victim
No elderly person is immune from elder abuse. It can happen to anyone – even a world-famous comic book creator. Stan Lee, who created the Marvel Comics characters who dominate today’s blockbuster movies, is now alleging he is being abused by his daughter and three men who he says are trying to control his assets and his money.
Stan Lee is now 95 years old. He has an estate worth as much as $70 million. Although he requires nursing care, he is still able to travel to Comic Con events. However, he has become more vulnerable since his wife died last year after 69 years of marriage.
People who abuse the elderly can be nursing home employees or strangers running fraudulent schemes. They can also be people close to the victim. In Stan Lee’s case, it is the people close to him – his daughter and three men who have worked for him – who are under suspicion.
Lee’s daughter has often had screaming fights with her parents about money. At one time, a few years ago, according to Lee’s former business manager who was there at the time, the fighting turned physical, with Lee’s daughter allegedly shoving her mother against a window and slamming her father’s head against the back of a chair.
The Hollywood Reporter recently published a signed and notarized declaration that Lee had written, alleging that his daughter tries to intimidate and bully him by yelling at him and that she is influenced by the three men who are trying to gain control of his assets.
