4 Signs of Elder Health Care and Insurance Fraud
Elderly people make tempting targets for scammers. Fraud costs older Americans more than $36 billion every year. If you or your loved one are old enough to receive Medicare, you need to protect yourself by watching out for signs of fraud.
A common type of fraud committed against seniors involves health insurance or health care fraud. This is a particularly sneaky type of scam because people are likely to trust health insurance companies and their health care providers.
Here are some of the signs to watch for:
Incorrect billing – Check your medical bills. Dishonest health care providers could bill you for services you didn’t receive or for treatments that are more expensive than those you did receive. They might also bill you twice for the same services.
Insurance agent scams – Take your time when choosing a Medicare Advantage or other health insurance plans. An honest insurance agent will correctly describe a plan’s benefits and will help you find the best plan for your needs. A dishonest agent will lie about the plans and push you to sign up for a plan that is not right for you.
Medications sold on the internet – Prescription drugs sold online may be cheaper, but many online pharmacies are operating illegally and selling drugs with the wrong dose or the wrong medication. Some drugs may not even work because they haven’t been stored correctly. Look out for online pharmacies willing to sell you prescription drugs without a prescription from your health care provider. You should also take caution with pharmacies that are located outside of the United States or sites that sell medication at prices that seem too good to be true.
People trying to steal your Medicare number – Be careful with Medicare numbers, both yours and your loved ones. Scammers can use them for identity theft. They might try something sneaky like offer free screenings at a health event or ask you to fill out a form that includes a space to put in your Medicare number.
