Garcia & Artigliere Representing Former West Anaheim Medical Center Patient in Elder Abuse Claim
An 80-year-old woman who is represented by the Garcia & Artigliere legal team brought an elder abuse claim against West Anaheim Medical Center.
The plaintiff was admitted to West Anaheim Medical Center to be treated for fall-related injuries, which included a fractured shoulder. She required surgery to address her shoulder injury, a procedure she completed approximately three days after her admission to the hospital.
Following the surgery, the patient’s limited mobility made her particularly susceptible to the development of bedsores. As medical professionals, the hospital staff should have been aware of this increased risk and known how to prevent pressure sore development. However, the complaint alleges that the staff did not provide their patient with the care she required.
Allegedly, understaffing at West Anaheim Medical Center left the plaintiff without the full level of medical attention she needed. The complaint further alleges that the facility’s limited staff was due to attempts to maximize profits by Prime Healthcare Services, Inc., a parent company of the hospital.
The patient was discharged to Anaheim Health Care Center following an approximately weeklong stay at West Anaheim Medical Center. Due to the purported insufficient medical care, the claimant developed a severe bedsore, which was discovered by the staff of Anaheim Health Care Center.
Pressure sore severity ranges from Stage I to Stage IV. The plaintiff’s wound was labeled as “unstageable,” meaning it was categorized as a Stage III to Stage IV bedsore and was covered in a type of dead tissue known as “eschar.”
Previously to the facility transfer, the patient’s condition was not disclosed to her family and legal representative. The alleged neglect of the West Anaheim Medical Center staff caused extensive harm, pain, and suffering to the claimant.
