How a New Device Uses Technology to Keep Seniors Safe

Garcia & Artigliere

New technology is not just for young people! Recent developments in high-tech apps and devices hold the promise of making life easier, more convenient, safer, or better for the elderly. Exciting recent projects include:

  • Using iPads to help Alzheimer’s patients become more socially engaged
  • Making it easier for seniors to use app-based ride-sharing services to increase their independence
  • Using a virtual reality game to help diagnose dementia.

Now there’s a new product for seniors that uses cutting-edge technology straight out of a science-fiction movie—artificial intelligence and wearable devices.

Prevent Falls, Instead of Just Reporting Them

Wearable alert systems have been on the market for a while. They can be lifesavers when seniors fall, enabling them to contact the outside world for help even if they can’t get to a phone. However, a new device called CarePredict takes this a step further. It helps prevent seniors from falling in the first place, by predicting potential problems.

Using Artificial Intelligence to Detect Problems

The new device, which is worn like a wristwatch, collects information about the wearers’ day-to-day activities and behaviors. The device uses artificial intelligence to learn how each user normally performs his or her tasks of daily living and to recognize when someone is not behaving the way they usually do. For example, if a user normally wakes up around the same time every day, but one day has still not gotten out of bed an hour later, the device can send an alert to a caregiver.

Available for Seniors Living in Group Settings

The device has just come on the market this year. It is now used in some assisted living communities, memory care centers, and other group settings. In the future, it may be available for individuals to buy.
