Shocking Elder Abuse by Home Health Care Workers

Garcia & Artigliere

Home health care aides perform a very important service: helping families take care of their elderly loved ones. Many are dedicated to their clients, despite the home health care industry’s notoriously low pay. Some aides, however, are bad apples who neglect, abuse or steal from the people they are supposed to be taking care of.

Many Types of Abuse

Abuse can take many forms – physical, emotional and financial. Aides can trick or charm their elderly victims into giving them access to their assets. They may engage in shocking acts of negligence. In some cases, home health care aides have even murdered the elderly people entrusted to their care.

The Problem with Home Health Care Agencies

The problem is that many health home care agencies do not properly screen or train their aides. Regulations vary from state to state but are often not strong enough. Most states don’t even require the agencies to check if their applicants have committed any crimes in states outside of their own. Half of the states don’t require the agencies to provide any training at all to their aides.

What You Can Do If a Loved One Needs an Aide

If you want to hire a home health care aide to assist a loved one, you should look for an agency that does a good job screening and training its aides. Be sure to ask questions to find out about the agency’s procedures and policies, including how the agency recruits and hires new aides and how it evaluates their performance on the job. A reliable agency will do the following:

  • Perform criminal background checks and drug screening for all applicants.
  • Ensure and bond its aides.
  • Allow you to replace an aide if you are dissatisfied for any reason.
  • Have supervisors who monitor and evaluate the work of the aides.
  • Provide aides who have been trained in relevant knowledge and skills, such as CPR, behavior management and health matters.
