Make an Elderly Relative Happy - Celebrate Grandparents Day on September 10, 2017
Everyone has heard of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, but how many know about Grandparents Day? Whether you’ve heard of it or not, it is a national holiday, and it is coming up soon – on September 10, 2017.
Grandparents Day became an official national holiday 39 years ago. We can thank a woman named Marian McQuade for her tireless efforts convincing governors and members of Congress to make Grandparent’s Day a reality. After years of work, McQuade’s efforts were rewarded when the first 43 states and then the U.S. Congress and President Jimmy Carter recognized Grandparents Day as an official holiday. It is celebrated each year on the first Sunday that follows Labor Day.
Even if you have never celebrated Grandparents Day before, now that you know it exists, it is a great excuse for spending a wonderful day with an elderly member of your family.
Here are some ideas for how you can create a special day for your loved one in the Los Angeles area:
Take Your Loved One for a Drive
Going for a drive to see some of your loved one’s favorite sites can be a wonderful experience for both of you. The drive will be particularly special if your loved one is a nursing home resident or spends much of their time inside at home. But even if your loved one often gets out and about, they will still enjoy seeing places they don’t often see and getting a chance to have a relaxed talk with you in the privacy of your car. Depending on your loved one’s stamina, abilities, and interests, you can combine the drive with a restaurant meal, a movie, a sporting event, an artistic performance, or watching the sunset on the beach.
Take the Entertainment to Them
If your loved one would prefer to stay where they are, bring entertainment to them. Make Grandparents Day special by bringing a video of one of their favorite movies, or photographs that will stir up good memories. You can also bring materials for hobby projects, such as crafts or jigsaw puzzles that you can work on together.
When You Need Help
While Grandparents Day is special, every day should be a day where your elderly loved one is treated with dignity and respect.
