Create a Wonderful Father's Day for Your Elderly Dad!
Father’s Day is coming up quickly – Sunday, June 18th. If your dad is elderly, you can create a special day for him that will bring the two of you closer and leave you both feeling good. The key is to give some thought to what your dad most enjoys doing while keeping in mind what his current abilities are. Then plan a day that will be stimulating for him, but not overly tiring. Here are some ideas:
- Take a walk. If your father is up for it, going for a walk is a wonderful way to share Father’s Day with him, especially if he spends most of his time indoors. Depending upon your dad’s preferences, you could enjoy a peaceful stroll through a park, an energizing walk on city streets, or a trip down memory lane to places where he used to live or work. If the weather is bad, you could still get some healthy exercise by taking a walk around the mall.
- Go for a drive. If a walk is too strenuous, and if you enjoy driving, your dad might like sitting back and relaxing in the passenger seat as you drive down a beautiful country road or through a busier area with interesting sights to see.
- Catch a movie. Is your dad a film buff? Take him to see his favorite genre of movie. The excitement of being in a movie theater and watching a film on the big screen may remind your dad of his younger days.
- Arrange a poker party. If your dad doesn’t want to or is unable to go out, bring the fun to him. Invite a few people to join you in playing poker or whatever game your dad most enjoys. Instead of playing for money, you could use food items like pretzels and small candies as a way to keep score — and then eat the winnings before the party is over.
Whether your dad lives at home, in assisted living, or in a nursing home, you can provide him with a wonderful day.
Unfortunately, not all days are wonderful for elders living in facilities. If you ever suspect your dad is not being treated right, contact an elder abuse attorney for more information. Call Garcia & Artigliere at (800) 328-2630 to find out more.
