These Ride-Sharing Services Are Helping Seniors Stay Independent

Garcia & Artigliere

After seniors stop driving, they need to deal with the question of how to get around. One exciting possible solution is for seniors to use ride-sharing services, such as Uber and Lyft, which will pick them up at their door and take them exactly where they need to go. There is one big problem, though. Customers of ride-sharing services place orders for rides using apps on smartphones. The same reliance on apps that have made ride-sharing services such a big hit with Millennials, unfortunately, makes the services inaccessible to many seniors who do not have smartphones or are not comfortable using apps.

The Wave of the Future

Now there are several projects dedicated to changing that – to make it possible for seniors to use ride-sharing services without having to use smartphone apps. These are all pilot programs at the moment, but they look promising. If they work out, they could be the wave of the future. Someday, seniors being comfortable using ride-sharing services may be the norm. The need is there both for seniors, who want convenient transportation options and for the ride-sharing companies, which want to increase their market share.

Talk to a Person

Various programs are being tested now in different areas. What they all have in common is they provide a way for seniors to talk to a person, who will then place their order for them with a ride-sharing service. Some of the methods being tested now include:

  • Providing a toll-free number where seniors can call and place an order with an operator for a ride. Payment is via credit card.
  • Making ride-sharing orders available as a feature on phones that are designed for seniors. In this program, seniors press “0” to talk to an operator, who will place their ride-sharing order for them. They are billed for the rides on their phone bills.
  • Creating central dashboards in communities like senior housing or assisted living where staff can place orders for rides and handle payments.

If these programs become more widely adopted, they could make a significant difference in the lives of seniors. Having access to safe, reliable, and flexible transportation options is an important part of staying independent.

Unfortunately, not all news about seniors is this positive. Elder abuse is a terrible problem. If you ever suspect a loved one is being abused, it can be very helpful to talk to an experienced lawyer. The elder abuse lawyers at Garcia & Artigliere would be glad to talk to you.
