New Program Helps Seniors Protect Themselves from Fraud and Elder Financial Scams

Garcia & Artigliere

These days, an increasing number of senior citizens have fallen victim to elderly financial scams. These illegal schemes are often used to prey upon senior citizens who may simply not know better or are unsuspecting. In an effort to cut back on instances of investment fraud and other financial scams committed against senior citizens, Pennsylvania’s Department of Banking and Securities has recently released a game called “Investment Fraud Bingo.”

Investment Fraud Bingo

The purpose of Investment Fraud Bingo is to educate senior citizens about the signs and red flags of a financial senior fraud scheme using a medium that’s both fun and familiar to them. Specifically, the game is set up in a very similar manner to traditional Bingo; the main difference is that instead of using letters and numbers to spell out the word “Bingo,” the goal of the game is to spell out the word “Fraud.”

With each turn, a question or fill-in-the-blank regarding investment fraud is asked. Those who figure out the answer (a term found on their Bingo board) are able to mark the designated letter (either an “F,” “R,” “A,” “U,” or “D”) on their board. The first person to claim “Fraud” wins!

How It Helps

Investment Fraud Bingo is an excellent way for senior citizens to learn more about investment fraud, potential signs of a scam, and other red flags to be on the lookout for in a way that’s exciting and enjoyable for them. Rather than having to sit through a lecture or boring demonstration, senior citizens can gain the knowledge and understanding that they need in a fun and engaging format, without feeling like they’re being talked down to or lectured. The end result is a win-win situation for all involved (except for the scammers, of course).
