Marlora Post Acute Rehabilitation Hospital Sued for Elder Abuse

Garcia & Artigliere

Garcia & Artigliere filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against the staff and management of Marlora Post Acute Rehabilitation Hospital in Long Beach, CA, for negligence and abuse against Lois Perovich, an elderly patient who developed an openly bleeding pressure sore on her body.

“The staff at this facility were negligent and put Lois’ health at serious risk,” said Attorney Stephen Garcia. “In addition to the injuries she suffered, her physical, mental and emotional well-being have been permanently jeopardized by the horrible care she experienced.”

Ms. Perovich fractured her right knee and hip during a fall in October of 2015. She was admitted to Marlora Post Acute Rehabilitation Hospital on November 3, 2015, to receive care and begin recovering from her fall. Upon Ms. Perovich’s admission into the facility, it was made clear to the staff that in addition to her broken hip and knee, Ms. Perovich also suffered from various medical conditions, including a hiatal hernia and a history of strokes that required blood thinners. These blood thinners made Ms. Perovich susceptible to the development of pressures sores and infection if not treated properly.

Throughout Ms. Perovich’s stay at Marlora Post Acute Rehabilitation Hospital, the staff ignored her physician’s orders by failing to rotate her body in order to alleviate bed sores, allowing her to wallow in her own feces and urine for extended periods of time, failing to inform her family of her skin break-downs, and failing to provide adequate hydration and nutrition to keep her healthy.

As a result of having the required care withheld from her, Ms. Perovich developed a severe, infected, open and bloody Stage IV pressure sore on her tailbone.

On December 21, 2015, after being a resident in the facility for just slightly more than one month, Ms. Perovich was transferred home for hospice care. Once Ms. Perovich was home, her family finally learned the true and horrific care she had received at Marlora Post Acute Rehabilitation Hospital. To this day, Ms. Perovich suffers extreme pain from the injuries she sustained at the facility.
