Garcia & Artigliere Sues Alexandria Care Center for Wrongful Death
Garcia, Artigliere & Medby filed against Alexandria Care Center, Skilled Healthcare Group and Genesis Healthcare, alleging that the staff at the facility was negligent and withheld care, ultimately causing Alexis Shilaponkioff to contract pneumonia and die.
Mr. Shilaponkioff was 92 years old when he arrived at Alexandria Care Center in January 2015 after suffering a stroke. While he was otherwise healthy and free from any skin conditions, his caretakers made it clear that he required constant care and attention, including repositioning his body regularly. During Mr. Shilaponkioff’s roughly eight months at Alexandria Care Center, the staff failed to care for his bed sores properly. They also negligently ignored that he was suffering from dehydration and renal failure. The facility was so negligent in their duties that Mr. Shilaponkioff developed a bruise on his arm when he tried to signal someone for help by hitting his bed.
“The staff lied to Mr. Shilaponkioff’s caretakers, misrepresented his condition and as a result, a man died,” said attorney Stephen Garcia. “The companies involved in this lawsuit put profit over patient care.”
When Mr. Shilaponkioff’s family brought his condition and ill-treatment to the attention of the staff, the individuals charged with his care were often unfazed, commenting once they “didn’t think” to rotate him properly. Mr. Shilaponkioff needed to be hospitalized twice for the terrible care he had received, and his treating doctor commented on his extremely poor condition, even calling the facility to voice his concerns.
Finally, Alexandria Care Center treated Mr. Shilaponkioff so poorly that he developed a severe, yet avoidable, series of pressure ulcers on his coccyx area, severe dehydration, pneumonia, renal failure and infections, and ultimately lost his life.
