La Crescenta Nursing Facility Sued for Wrongful Death

Garcia & Artigliere

Garcia & Artigliere filed a lawsuit against Verdugo Vista Healthcare Center in La Crescenta for the wrongful death of Calliopi Chaldaris as a result of severe elder abuse and neglect.

“The facility disregarded the care Ms. Chaldaris required on every level,” said Attorney Stephen Garcia. “Verdugo Vista neglected her needs and ultimately caused her death.”

In June 2015, Ms. Chaldaris was diagnosed with brain cancer. After her diagnosis, Ms. Chaldaris was transferred to Verdugo Vista Healthcare Center to provide the around-the-clock care she needed to prevent further medical complications. Both the facility and staff were aware of her condition; however, from the day Ms. Chaldaris entered the facility, staff members treated her poorly, ignoring her high risk for developing pressure sores, as well as several other conditions.

The staff neglected Ms. Chaldaris, allowing her to soak in her urine and feces for significant periods of time and not properly cleaning her. Because of her myriad of health issues, Ms. Chaldaris was particularly susceptible to the development of pressure sores and infection, therefore requiring very specific and attentive care. Rather than providing the care required to address the very conditions for which Ms. Chaldaris had been transferred to the facility, the staff utterly ignored her needs and withheld the care she needed over the next several weeks.

Conditions became so poor, and the treatment Ms. Chaldaris was receiving was so bad that her husband secretly attempted to pay staff members to help obtain the care she needed. In spite of his best efforts, the facility continued to withhold the care Ms. Chaldaris needed. She also began to suffer from unexplained cuts and bruises on her body.

In addition to withholding care and neglecting Ms. Chaldaris’ basic needs, the staff failed to properly administer pain and anti-seizure medications to her. The poor treatment became so severe that Ms. Chaldaris’ family was required to hold her down as she suffered multiple seizures and writhed in pain.

Finally, on July 25, 2015, less than one month after Ms. Chaldaris was checked into Verdugo Vista Healthcare Center, the strain on the family had become so severe that they called 911 and had her taken to Verdugo Hills Hospital. Unfortunately, Ms. Chaldaris passed away just a few days after her loved ones intervened.
