The Risks of Nursing Homes

Garcia & Artigliere

When the proper care and attention are administered, a nursing home can be a place of great love and compassion. And as people age and become unable to take care of themselves, moving into an assisted living facility is often the best choice available to them. If you are sending your loved one to live in a nursing home, however, it is essential that you thoroughly investigate any facility you are considering, in order to avoid the risks that accompany some nursing homes.

These risks may include:

  • Bed sores. Also called pressure sores, these painful lesions occur when prolonged pressure is put on the skin. They most often occur when a patient is confined to a bed, a wheelchair or is otherwise immobile. They can usually be prevented through vigilant care, and their presence is often an indicator of neglect.
  • Neglect. Elder neglect is a disturbingly common problem, with one publication reporting that nearly half of all elder abuse cases are the result of neglect. Failing to provide elderly patients with fresh food and water, not administering their medication or failing to do so on the correctly prescribed schedule, not keeping their living quarters clean and pleasant and failing to attend to their personal cleanliness and hygiene are all examples of neglect that can have serious, or even life-threatening, consequences.
  • Medication errors. Medication is a fact of life for many elderly people, so any error in administration, whether out of malice, carelessness or ignorance, can be extremely harmful, if not fatal. Errors in prescription, including wrong medication and incorrect dosages, are also common.

Every elderly person has a right to a clean, safe, healthy living environment. If you suspect the older adult in your life is suffering from abuse or neglect at his or her nursing home, remove them from the situation immediately and contact a law firm with experience in handling nursing home and elder abuse cases.
