Nursing Home Aide Convicted Of Abusing 92-Year-Old Woman

Garcia & Artigliere

In a particularly disturbing case of elder sexual abuse, a 22-year-old nursing home aide was convicted of raping a 92-year-old woman at the Cincinnati facility where he worked. The woman, who died within 3 months from an unrelated condition, was confined to her bed and unable to communicate at the time of the rape.

Sadly, such incidents are not rare; in fact, sexual abuse of elders is a common problem in many nursing homes and caregiving facilities across the United States. It can be difficult to tell when an elderly person has been a victim of rape or sexual abuse. For some, it is physically impossible to communicate due to afflictions such as speech issues or dementia. For others, they are able to communicate, but unwilling to do so because of the shame or fear they feel.

The elderly have a right to live in a safe, protected environment where their basic human needs are met and respected. If you have a family member living in a nursing home, it is important to monitor them for signs of sexual abuse, which may include bruising, bleeding, unexplained STDs, pain in the genital area, withdrawal, or scared behavior.

Ultimately, the perpetrator in the Cincinnati case was found guilty of his crimes and convicted of rape, felonious assault, and patient abuse. He is currently facing up to 20 years in prison.
