Kentucky Nursing Home Abuse in the News

Garcia & Artigliere

Nursing homes are intended to support and care for our loved ones — but, alarmingly, they can also do the opposite. A recent nursing home abuse casehas shocked the state of Kentucky, leading Kentucky’s Attorney General to issue a statement on the pressing issue.

Two dependent adults, residents of Somerset’s Oakwood Manor facility, are alleged to have been abused by 22-year-old Coty King and 21-year old Cody Burton. According to Kentucky’s Attorney General, King enticed one adult patient to physically abuse another patient, while recording the incident on his cell phone. King was charged with two counts of knowing neglect of a vulnerable adult. Burton, the second suspect, was charged with the same two counts and one count of failure to report the neglect.

These types of charges are Class C felonies — meaning if the accused are found guilty, they face a maximum of 5-10 years in prison. Oakwood employees, who reported the incident to adult protective services, were initially pulled from duty during the investigation.

Upon announcing the incident on September 19th, Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway stated, “My office is working hard to help protect our most vulnerable citizens, but all Kentuckians play an important role.” He encouraged anyone who suspects nursing home abuse to report it using Kentucky’sadult protective services hotline.
