The Florida Turnpike was the scene of a fire that shut it down. The fire, shooting flames into the air, happened due to several tractor-trailers involved in a collision. The truck driver and his passenger were injured and taken to a local hospital – their injuries were not life-threatening.
Investigators believe the refrigeration unit inside the truck’s cab (which was destroyed) was the cause of the fire. It was carrying yogurt and other refrigerated products. It was determined that one of the tractor-trailers had a tire blowout. As he was attempting to pull off the road and onto the shoulder, an 18-wheeler that was behind him ran right into him. That is when the truck caught on fire.
The Turnpike was closed in both directions for a while and reopened when the fire was extinguished.
