Stephen M. Garcia Is Named a Finalist for "Street Fighter of the Year"

Garcia & Artigliere

On September 11, 2007, Garicia & Artigliere attorney Stephen M. Garcia was named as a finalist for the “Street Fighter of the Year” award to be awarded in San Francisco on November 10, 2007 at the association’s annual convention. The criteria utilized by the association in determining finalists for this award are a plaintiffs’ lawyer who achieved a significant result in a case (1) finally resolved in the years 2006/2007, and (2) that exemplifies the everyday struggles of the small practitioner in California.

Factors considered include:

  • Whether the case exemplifies how trial lawyers use their skill and determination to create a more just society, regardless of profit or personal benefit;
  • Whether the case demonstrates a particular skill of the lawyer in achieving the result;
  • Whether the attorney faced unusual obstacles, great risk, or incredible odds s/he had to overcome;
  • Whether the case and/or attorney stands out in comparison to similar case results or settlement offers.

CAOC is an organization of more than 3,000 attorneys who represent plaintiffs/consumers who seek responsibility from wrongdoers.

  • Consumers injured or killed by defective products or drugs;
  • People who suffer discrimination because of age, gender, disability or race;
  • Those injured or killed because of another’s negligent acts;
  • Citizens whose civil rights have been violated;
  • Workers who have been fired unjustly or injured on the job;
  • Investors and others wronged by financial institutions (including failed savings and loans);
  • Insureds whose lives fall apart when an insurance company acts in bad faith and in violation of its own contract;
  • Patients who have been damaged personally and financially by negligent professionals.

In each case, the person the CAOC member represents faces an opponent with far more power and access to resources: polluters, governments, insurance companies, automobile manufacturers, and banks. CAOC members take cases they view as worthy, invest their own resources in developing and taking such cases to court, often over a several year period, and are paid only from those cases which are successful.

Garcia commented, “This nomination is unique in that it is not about monetary recovery and that we have been fortunate enough to have acquired significant verdicts and settlements for our clients. This award reflects our willingness to fight for the underdog because it is the right thing to do rather than focusing on economic recovery.

So, I’m especially gratified of this nomination as it reflects what our firm is to really about – which is advocate the interests of those who are less fortunate and who would be abused by the profiteers in large corporations.”
