Recent Elder Abuse Cases in California Are Absolutely Horrifying
When we hear of cases where criminals prey on the weakest and most vulnerable among us, it can shake our faith in humanity. This is especially true when abusers work against seniors who unwittingly trust them. The natural reaction is shock and horror that such abuse could take place in a prosperous nation like the United States.
Nevertheless, criminals find seniors to be an easy target. Fortunately, elder abuse attorneys in California are standing by to assist in such cases. What follows are three examples of recent elder abuse cases that people should be aware of.
Neglected Until Dead
In Fort Bragg, police arrested a caregiver, Lori Diane Fiorentino, charging her in connection with the death of 66-year-old Arlene Potts. Officers discovered the decaying body of Potts, who was wearing only soiled diapers, according to The Press Democrat.
Fiorentino, if convicted, may go to jail for four years. Potts had grown reclusive following an accident in 2013. Under the care of Fiorentino, her body became severely emaciated and covered with lesions prior to her death.
Newport was the location of a financial scam that recently targeted a 95-year-old woman whose name was not released by the police. According to a report from Newport Beach Patch, Thomas Chapman Hood was charged with 19 counts of forgery and financial elder abuse. Hood had been employed as the victim’s assistant and used his access to her bank to drain her accounts, forging checks that amounted to $534,850.
Abandoning an Elder
Abandonment of seniors is another serious type of abuse that you should be aware of. In Los Angeles, the L.A. County Office of the Public Guardian filed a petition to become designated the permanent guardian of 76-year-old Earl Roger Curry, according to NBC.
Curry, a southern California resident, is an Alzheimer’s patient whose family was accused of abandoning him in a tiny village in Great Britain two years ago. Curry was discovered wandering around disoriented in England. He stayed there in a nursing home until he was finally identified and sent back home to L.A.
These three shocking cases of elder abuse that made recent headlines in California are enough to make your skin crawl. Feelings of revulsion can turn to feelings of triumph, though, when you help bring abusers to justice.
