Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly

How are California Care Facilities Different?

In California, there are two predominent types of nursing care facilities: skilled nursing facilities and residential care facilities for the elderly. Many people do not understand the difference between these two kinds of care, but the difference can have a huge impact on the kind of care their loved ones receive. At The Garcia Law Firm, our lawyers strive to help our clients understand how the differences in care may affect them.

Skilled Nursing Facility (Nursing Home)

In California, nursing homes are called skilled nursing facilities. These skilled care facilities are required to be licensed by the state. They must meet certain standards in order to keep licensure. Skilled nursing facilities often take care of the sickest patients with the most complex medical needs. Some larger skilled nursing chains include:

  • Alterra Healthcare
  • Atria Healthcare
  • Beverly Healthcare
  • Brookdale Senior Living
  • Emeritus
  • Ensign Corporation
  • Evergreen Healthcare
  • ExtendiCare
  • Five Star Quality Care
  • Golden Horizons
  • Golden Living
  • HCM Healthcare
  • Helios Healthcare
  • Holiday Retirement Corporation
  • HorizonWest
  • Kindred Healthcare
  • Life Care Centers of America
  • Manor Care
  • Mariner Healthcare
  • National Healthcare
  • North American Senior Care
  • Odyssey Healthcare
  • SAVA Senior Care
  • Skilled Healthcare
  • Sunbridge
  • SunMar Healthcare
  • Sunrise Senior Living
  • Sunwest Management
  • Tenet Healthcare
  • Windsor Heathcare

Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE, “Assisted Living” or “Board and Care”)

Residential care facilities are unlicensed, non-medical facilities that give custodial care for the elderly. They are often called assisted living or board and care facilities. While they are supposed to provide care and guidance with daily living, the occurrence of abuse is actually higher in these than in skilled nursing facilities.

Our founding attorney, Stephen Garcia, is highly familiar with residential care facilities and the tactics they use to avoid responsibility for their negligence. Mr. Garcia participated in writing the law and jury instructions on California RCFEs.

At many RCFEs, poor custodial care and neglect of residents’ rights is a business strategy designed to increase their profit. Some of the largest Residential Care Facilities are already commonly known names:

  • Sunrise Senior Living
  • Sunrise Healthcare
  • Atria
  • Sunwest
